Descriptions of Screenings
Montpelier Room-SWIM Women's Imaging Center Mammography
Screening:
Mammography detects about 90% of breast cancers in women
and is the most effective means of detection for breast
cancer without symptoms. Women over the age of 40 should
receive an annual mammogram. Appointments must be made prior
by calling the SWIM Women's Imaging Center at St. Vincent's
Medical Center at 203-576-5501. Please bring your physician
referral and insurance card at time of visit. All major
insurances are accepted. For the uninsured, St. Vincent's
Swim Across the Sound will cover the costs for those who
qualify.
Booth 3-Rehabilitation-Balance: At the Rehab table, we
will be screening for risk to fall and balance. We will
be using the Functional Reach Test for assessing risk to
fall and the Modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction
of Balance to assess balance. We will also be giving out
information on fall prevention. This screening is free.
Booth 9-Hall-Brooke Behavioral Health Services-Depression:
Mental health professionals from Hall-Brooke Behavioral
Health Services are available for depression screenings
and to provide general mental health information to people
of all ages. Please stop by to learn more about prevention,
treatment and the warning signs of depression and other
mental health issues. This screening is free.
Booth 7-Regional Heart & Vascular Center-Body Fat Analysis:
Body fat analysis is done through bio-impedance and takes
two minutes. Recommendations are made based on your percentage
of body fat. Excess weight and body fat puts significant
strain on your heart and worsens several other heart disease
risk factors, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and
high cholesterol and triglycerides. Researchers now know
that obesity itself increases heart disease and stroke risk.
This screening is free.
Booth 8- Regional Heart & Vascular Center-Cardiovascular
Risk Assessments: If an attendee has their blood pressure
and cholesterol checked, St. Vincent's can perform a Cardiovascular
Risk Assessment. The risk assessment was developed as part
of the Framingham Heart Study, which was started in 1948,
and to date is one of the largest generational studies in
Cardiovascular Disease. The risk assessment will rank the
percentage of risk over 10 years. This screening is free.
Booth 6-IHC-Cholesterol and Glucose: The risk for heart
disease and stroke increase as your total amount of cholesterol
increases. Also, if glucose levels are not properly controlled,
it can lead to diabetes, a significant risk factor for heart
disease and stroke. Cholesterol and glucose screenings take
about ten minutes. Our nurses will discuss your results.
This screening is $20.
Booth 6-Blood Pressure: If you don't know what your blood
pressure is, come find out! More than 50 million people
in the U.S. have hypertension, or high blood pressure, making
it the most common heart disease and stroke risk factor.
One in four adults has systolic blood pressure (the upper
number) over 140, and/or diastolic blood pressure (the lower
number) over 90, which is the definition of hypertension.
The goal is to reach a blood pressure of 120/80 or lower.
Like cholesterol, blood pressure treatment should be individualized,
taking into account your entire risk profile. This screening
is free.
Booth 11-Swim Center for Skin Care-Skin Cancer: Baby Boomer
sunbathers begin to pay the price! Remember those days of
reckless sunbathing? Baby oil and iodine mixture, laying
on lounge chairs on black top oil driveways and covering
our Carly Simon albums with tin foil? That was long before
the talk of wrinkles, brown spots, broken blood vessels,
and skin cancer. Come and experience "The Skin Analyzer"
and see the actual damage that was done. Nearly two million
Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer each year. Most
adults get 90% of our sun exposure by the time we reach
20, but the sun effects may not show up for another 20-30
years. So come on Baby Boomers and take a look! This screening
is free.
