A Bird’s Eye View: Citizen Science and Social Networks
March 4 – April 22, 2010
Opening Thursday, March 4 7:00pm
Participating in "social networks" is one of today's popular trends, but social networks have been around for a long time in different forms. Like today, they have been used to build awareness of current issues and motivate social action. A Bird's-Eye View: Citizen Science and Social Networks looks at the achievements of several remarkable citizen scientists, past and present, who have effectively used social networking to advance the work of the Connecticut Audubon Society. Mabel Osgood Wright, a resident of Fairfield in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was a skilled "social connector," photographer, author, and activist who was instrumental in securing the Birdcraft wildlife sanctuary and founding the CAS in 1914 through her many contacts in the community. Today teams of volunteer citizen scientists and the staff at CAS centers throughout the state conduct research, incorporating popular social networking technology to support their initiatives. The exhibition, which includes artifacts and documents from the CAS and Fairfield Museum collections as well as other lenders, will explore the evolving work of the CAS, beginning with Wright's history of marshaling community resources, and extending to today's current projects, research tools, and social networks. The exhibition, guest curated by William Frank Mitchell of the CAS . |

BOOK SIGNING AT NORWALK PUBLIC LIBRARY
THE SONO BAKING COMPANY COOKBOOK AND JOHN BARRICELLI
On Monday, March 15, 2010, the Norwalk Public Library is hosting a book signing by John Barricelli for his newly released The SoNo Baking Company Cookbook at 6 pm, Norwalk Public Library, 1 Belden Avenue, Norwalk, CT.
The SoNo Baking Company & Café is the creation of John Barricelli who had a vision of creating artisan breads, top quality French style pastries, specialty cakes in a homey, inviting Bakery/Café.
For fans of PBS’s Everyday Baking from Everyday Food and home bakers seeking one easy-to-follow reference for all their sweet and savory baking needs, from breakfast breads to beautiful party cakes, John Barricelli, owner of The SoNo Baking Company & Café, presents 125 recipes for sweet and savory breads and baked goods, with a focus on techniques and finishing skills to produce beautiful, bakery-quality results at home. His cookbook is a comprehensive and inviting cookbook with easy-to-follow directions. It will empower novices and advanced bakers to revamp their baking repertoires and create new variations on old favorites.
With the opening of The SoNo Baking Company & Café John realized his dream of owning a Bakery/Café . It is located in popular South Norwalk, CT (known as SoNo) in a renovated former warehouse. The open kitchen and bakery provides a view of hearth breads being baked in a deck oven imported from Italy, gorgeous cakes being decorated, and delicate pastries being carefully constructed - all while you dine in a homey, inviting Café which offers a simple, delicious menu.
John was involved in TV production, developing and testing Ms. Martha Stewart’s 1998 show, working with guest chefs and becoming an on-air personality. He often appeared with Ms. Stewart, showcasing his many talents. In 2003, a televised version of Everyday Food was being developed to feature real people who worked as cooks for the company - and also had busy and demanding lives. John was among the five chosen for an ensemble cast. Everyday Food went into production, was sold to PBS and can be seen in 80% of the television market nationally.

| A Morning for Moms: Kids, Kitchens and Food |
March 16, 2010
Location: Ring's End, 129 Danbury Road, Wilton, CT 06897
Phone: (203) 761-1000
Admission: Free
Event Time: 10:30 am - Noon
Ring's End
Ring's End Lumber will host a free “Morning for Moms” seminar from 10:30 a.m. – noon on Tuesday, March 16 in the Kitchen Design Center of the Wilton store. Color Consultant Rita T will be on hand to guide moms in an exploration of “New Colors in the Kitchen” and Michele Liguori will share tips on encouraging children to eat healthy foods, “Getting Beyond Pasta, Pizza and Nuggets.” Limited seating is available; parents are encouraged to pre-register by sending an email to RitaTMcCaf@aol.com.
“Kitchens have multiple color surfaces, with the cabinet choices accounting for as much as 70% of the surface area,” observed Rita T. “The colors of countertops, backsplash tiles and floor are also more permanent choices, but there are wonderful options for transforming this central family living space by incorporating new color trends for walls, ceiling and table settings. Among the innovative products from Benjamin Moore is an erasable, washable chalkboard paint that can be applied directly to the wall, creating a custom surface for family members to leave messages and drawings for each other,” she said.
For families that are considering a kitchen renovation, Ring’s End offers design services and cabinet lines for a variety of budgets, as well as natural stone and other counter surfaces. Updating architectural hardware and adding decorative moulding and millwork treatments can also refresh a tired kitchen, she added.
Ring’s End Kitchen & Bath Designers Christina Devos and Holly Wright will also be on hand to answer questions.
Michele Liguori, who is a sought-after speaker to PTO’s, corporate and youth groups, noted that visual appeal can account for 85% of a child’s decision whether or not to try new foods. Observing that parents already know they need to encourage nutritious eating, she will suggest chef secrets and innovative presentations to improve kids’ acceptance of healthy choices. Her presentation will also share a few “covert operations” that encourage children to try healthy foods. Among Chef Liguori’s suggestions for “Getting Beyond Pasta, Pizza and Nuggets” is the use of cones, “foodsicle”/kebab and “:shreddible edibles,” as well as using “miniware.” She will also provide recipes that subtly add the necessary serving portions of fruits and vegetables into favorite foods.
Rita T, a former elementary school teacher who is widely recognized by her trademark hat, has more than forty years experience in the design world, spanning product development, interior design and color consulting. Her practical approach to decorating encourages families to recycle furnishings and add pieces, using color as the catalyst to create harmonious and useable space as rooms evolve. Focusing primarily on color for the past ten years, she creates an annual “colors for your life” palette based on current trends and personalized for her clients. She is at the Ring’s End Paint Center in Wilton from 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and at the newly opened Ring’s End Paint & Design Center in Norwalk on Saturdays.
In-store color consultations are complimentary. Rita T can also be engaged as an independent color consultant to visit clients’ homes and help them create a custom color palette for individual or multiple rooms or a home’s exterior.
Ring's End Lumber in Wilton is located at 129 Danbury Road (route 7). Hours are 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday-Saturday (Thursday until 7 p.m. Call the store at (203) 761-1000 or (866) 842-7833 (toll free).

Kaoud Carpets & Rugs
Kaoud Carpets and Rugs will host a free design seminar, “Artwork Underfoot” with Color Consultant Rita T from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 18. Light refreshments will be served. Limited space is available; pre-register by sending an email to fred@kaouds.com or call (203) 762-0376.
"A quality rug offers wonderful design versatility,” said Fred Kaoud Jr, whose family has been known for providing both education and consistent quality to homeowners and the interior design trade for more than five decades. “The best way to insure a top quality handmade carpet is to feel the pile face. You are looking for good tightness and soft material. In an attractive rug the colors flow together peacefully,” he added.
“Beautiful rugs can provide the inspiration for a new color palette for any room,” observed Rita T. “Color trends tend to cycle over a period of about eight years, and today’s rugs fit perfectly with what is in style now, as well as with emerging color palettes. Strong vegetable tones like tomato, carrot and eggplant, as well as citron and warm grays are very popular now, and blues are everywhere,” she remarked.
For this design seminar, Rita T will create palettes to complement several different rugs, in a variety of price ranges, from the Kaoud collection of antique rugs, modern rugs, transitional, broadloom, custom carpet, sisal rugs, and jute rugs. “Rugs create a focal point for a dining room, foyer, family room or living room. The warm, rich, beautiful colors of a tribal rug suggest one color palette, a different selection might tell a primitive or tropical color story. Rugs woven with combinations of wool and silk fibers add a luxurious dimension to the very popular neutral grey tones prevalent in today's most important palette,” she said.
Rita T will also draw attention to the selection of stair runners. “In addition to oriental and tradition runner patterns which are often selected, there are newer, contemporary versions which enhance those important staircases in foyers and resolve both safety and acoustic concerns. Kaouds has just brought in an exciting new line with a good deal of exclusivity in Fairfield County,” she added.
Rita T, who is widely recognized by her trademark hat, has more than forty years experience in the design world, spanning product development, interior design and color consulting. Rita T can be engaged as an independent color and design consultant to visit clients’ homes and help them create a custom color palette for individual or multiple rooms or a home’s exterior. She is also able to access a variety of design products for her clients.

The Loft Artists Gallery presents a unique group show
LAA DRAWS II – The View from Inside. This show will feature drawings from LAA artists that will explore “the view from inside” says artist Donna Hargrove. Hargrove explains that “the view” can be what the artist is observing from inside the studio looking out or from an outside space looking in. “To draw is to look, examining the structure of appearances. These drawings will show the element of time when looking and drawing merge, revealing the simultaneity of a multitude of moments” adds artist Margaret Tsirantonakis, who along with Hargrove is co-chairing the show. Their vision is to also include drawings that depict “the view from inside” metaphorically; a view of the artist’s vision through the medium of drawing. “We hope these drawings show a unique glimpse into the thoughts and processes of the artist” says Hargrove, who hopes to inspire many of the LAA artists contributing work.
The LAA DRAWS II show will run from March 26 to May 2, with an opening reception that is free and open to the public on Friday, March 26, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. |

Covenant to Care for Children
You are invited to a very special event Covenant to Care for Children is hosting an artists’ reception to honor the youth who participated in this year’s Discovered Spirit Project. This is a rare opportunity for you to meet youth representative of those whom we serve through our programs at Covenant to Care for Children.
Words alone are not enough to express what children feel. This is especially true when they are faced with the complex issues of divorce, grief, violence, abuse, neglect or coping with poverty. We are giving a voice to these children to express a wide range of emotions and help them work through conflicts and traumas. While expressing themselves in this visual way, the children gained a sense of empowerment that can help them develop a positive self-image and improve their self-esteem.
The participants created masks guided by professional Connecticut artists, who volunteered their time and talents to the project, Donna Frustere and Karen Wright of Hartford; Katrina Franzen of Southport; and Marta Cunha and Julie Nearing of Middletown.
The masks are part of a juried show at Southport Galleries in Fairfield County, along with examples of the professional artists’ work. Sarah Biggers, Gallery Manager, has generously allowed use of this beautiful new Southport gallery located in the renovation of the village’s historic hardware store.
Celebrity judges include: Congressman John Larson, State Representative Gary Holder-Winfield, and Yvonne Harris, Event Coordinator for Hartford’s Artist Collective who will present awards for the masks showing the greatest originality, presentation, and representation.
Beverages, and hors d'ourves by Carl Anthony will guarantee this to be an afternoon to remember.
For more information, please contact Covenant to Care for Children or visit our website.
We hope to see you there, and please invite your friends and neighbors! |
